This would drive the costs way down. The reason that costs are so high is, of course, the government. Medical providers can set the prices as high as they want, knowing that the money will somehow be provided. If people had to pay out of pocket, the medical industry would NEED to cut its prices.

I'm 40 years old, never smoked, don't drink to excess, eat healthy, exercise, go to the doctor yearly for my physical. Lab work always turn out peachy and there's never any need for any additional visits. Blood sugar, Cholesterol, Blood pressure, standard screenings...all good. I don't take any prescription drugs, I'm literally healthy.

Here's the fun thing, my insurance, if I were to use it, won't cover shit outside of yearly exams, unless I spend $4,500 deductible.

I spent a good part of my career practicing in a “one payer” system (Military). What I saw convinced me nationwide one payer would never work. I saw soldiers sign in to the ER because her fingernail broke. I saw soldiers sign in to the ER with paper cuts. Think about it. Even though they didn’t pay out of pocket, the cost just to sign in to an ER is around $500. Expand that to “all citizens” and it’s pretty easy to understand why “one payer” would be a disaster from day one.

The only difference between the two systems is that in one, you have a bunch of people who skim profit off the top while providing essentially nothing of value but a place to pool everyone's money. What's worse, they actively interfere with their customer's ability to get to that pool of money because that cuts into their profits. They find every way they can to not pay out claims that they should or to add on extra charges or pay only part of it. The relationship with the end user is always antagonistic, plus it becomes incredibly complicated because everyone has a different system so if your doctor doesn't have people who do billing for your insurance company, you can't use them.
