After I left the Army I applied to join the police. Same thing happened to me. They make you sit three exams, a short interview then a long interview with two officers. At the end of it all you get some feedback and despite getting 92 percent across the tests I was graded as unsuitable because of my performance in the interviews. I asked for more information which was denied. I was then told a few months later by someone relatively senior in the force I applied to that I was never in with a chance because I was white and male. Being ex Army made it even less likely, apparently.

Went to the NCA, passed their (much harder) series of interviews and tests and ended up catching real criminals. Not that bothered in the end but knowing that the system works that way is the worst bit.

Ah, and I was here under impression that british police can only confiscate illegal butter knives nowadays.

It's old news now and it's been going on for a few years here now. The BBC and some newspapers put out job adverts that specify only minorities should apply. Police forces across the country regularly tweet stuff similar to 'MINORITIES, WE NEED YOU!' as well.
