Found out my grandad was in the IRA

I found out my grandad who died when I was 10 was in the IRA. Im english but part of my family is from ireland. I have really fond memories of my grandad from when i was little and i've missed him every day since he was gone. The family kept this a secret and most of us didnt know at all. Is it wrong for me to still idolise my grandad even if he was in the IRA?

The Gaelic shall rise again death to the bong

Yes he was an evil bastard.

Depends on if you're a boomer or a zoomer.

30 year old boomer; congrats, the Irish Republican Army was absolutely an organization worth remembering. Daring leaders, selfless fighters, a noble cause that eventually won the day. Stand proud, you've got hero's blood in your veins.

Zoomer; yeah nah m8 provos are cunts and always were fuck him and the black cab he rode in on

IRA, provos, or RIRA? It makes a difference.

I dont know what he did or if he killed anyone, all i was told is that he was in the IRA. Only his part of the family knew this and they kept it a secret for years but my uncle (dad's brother) decided to tell everyone in order to make peace. He didnt say what he did so i dont know if he killed anyone, just he was in the IRA

Aye but you don't just 'be' in the ra, He was a terrorist lol.

Theres no reason to distinguish between PIRA, RIRA, NIRA or CIRA. They're all the same brand of cunt.

Well yeah p much

I dont know the difference between each one but my uncle just said "IRA"

Does that mean he definitely killed innocents? I feel really uneasy with this but i love my grandad

>Does that mean he definitely killed innocents? I feel really uneasy with this but i love my grandad
It means he was involved in the horrid things the IRA did, imo they done things worse than murdering ciivis.

too bad they didn't get maggie thatcher though

You've known him as your grandpa, probably you can't really match the idea of him and the fact that he was a terrorist. It's a normal behaviour on the psychological level, it's wrong if you start justifying what he did.

How fucking old are you already
And honestly at least the provos called their bombs in itd be a lot worse if he was an Ulsterman desu. They just straight murdered anyone who looked at them funny and claimed they were 'RA.

you should idolize him because he is in the IRA

Taig.

Like what?

Yeah thats how i feel, i cant imagine him murdering anyone

Im 18

>Like what?
There was a very good documentary that came out about 5 years ago about "the Disappeared". if you can find it anywhere I'd give it a watch, some of the most infuriating stuff I've heard, all coming from the mouths of the men themselves.
Here's the trailer:

But mate all I can say is keep your opinion of your Granda to your own experience of him, that's all that matters.

Fuck the RA but

Okay yeah your pap was a provo

He did what he felt was right. What matters more and is more informative often in morally ambiguous situations is what his manner of intent was. Questioning whether it is "wrong" or "right" to idolize somebody is ridiculous; you either do or you don't and moral belief systems spare little in telling you the truth. He's your family and he's presumably shown little in his character to dissuade you from liking him up until that secret was revealed.

you guys just larp as bongs when in reality everyone else just sees you as subhuman.

If you want some perspective EARRONS (serial rapist/killer) was a notorious criminal in his youth but seemingly stopped when he got older, had a normal life, kids, grandkids, the whole spread. I wouldn't like the guy, even if he was my gramps, if I figured out the disgusting shit he did.
Though desu, who's to say what he did in the IRA. Imagine gramps saying he was in our current antifa or proud boys, who gives a shit? It's cringe, but unless he was a criminal who really gives a heck?

Sure he was a nice guy but don't forget he was a murderous fuck'n terrorist. I've got friends and family from Ireland but as an Englishman I can't say anything else than fuck the IRA.
Won't speak ill of the dead, again no hard feelings to your granddad but a terrorist is still a fucking terrorist.

Well maybe dont try to enslave the whole fuckin world and your entire military history would be something other than getting your ass kicked in colonial revolutions and dildoed by the French.

OH GO ON HOME BRITISH SOLDIERS GO ON HOME

Up the ra, fuck the english bastards

UP THE 'RA

>Is it wrong for me to still idolise my grandad even if he was in the IRA?
If he was telling you to detonate nail bombs around groups of women and kids then it's wrong, if he was a decent granddad then it's all good.

>Imagine gramps saying he was in our current antifa or proud boys
It's a bit of a stretch trying to draw comparisons between a terror group that planted car bombs and bombed civilians to a group of masked protesters accusing everyone of being a nazi.

My grandparants and great-grandparents were in the IRA. When they started nail-bombing women and children he was disgusted by it and left. Support your granddad because he was probably a good person fighting for Irish ethnic autonomy.

Maybe you shouldn't idealise him anymore, now that you know what he did. Yet you can treasure your memories with him because he was a good grandpa.
You could try to learn more about what he did and try to understand how he ended up there and how much he was involved. Be critical about it.

What's with all the fucking Englishmen in this thread? The IRA was based and yes they had disgusting subhumans that targeted civilians but we Americans have the whole basis of our country on what is essentially terrorism.

Fuck colonialists and fuck you.
