So I watch a lot of US news. Frustrated with the daily churn and outrage, I decided to start keeping a record. As a sort of longitudinal study, I started writing down what I deemed was the major news story each day onto a sticky note. I've been doing this every weekday for over two years. Below is the completed 2017 record compiled into a video for your review:
You're going to remember a lot of these stories. They're going to come back to you. You'll probably be surprised at how much you forgot and how much you remember. Would love to get some people's thoughts on this, so if you're going to watch the video, some things to keep in mind: - How did these stories affect you? - How much did they matter? - Did they overshadow other events taking place? - Do they still matter? - Were they constructed? - Were they over-hyped? - Were they under-hyped? - How much power did we give these stories? - How did these stories affect the way you conversed with your people? - How did these stories affect your mood?
Really appreciate any and all feedback you might have on this pet project. FWIW I also made a twitter account. The project was sort of inspired by the "tweets from WWII" account that tweets out "on this day in history . . " stories from the war. twitter.com/jiggerypokerie
God bless your autism. I notice that back then and even now the media just can't stop talking about Trump. I get that it's a cashcow and easy attention whoring, but I'm surprised no one has moved on. Every day, Trump is a motherfucker here and a dickface there. It's stupid and shallow and encompasses everything I hate about American citizens.
Adrian Young
Interesting thoughts, user. There certainly are a lot of Trump-focused stories. .
interesting OP do you have a file you could link so we can take a look?
Ryan Gutierrez
this
Joshua Murphy
I kind of set out wondering what a years worth of these things would look like. I'm pretty pleased with the comments I've gotten on it so far. Fine point though I'm not quite sure yet either.
Hey user, did you ever figure out how you were going to distribute this?
Christopher Turner
High quality post OP.
Daily news appeals to the lowest common denominator. News also used to be 1hr a day and since it went to 24hrs they have to have a story for every one of those hours to stay alive. So now we have shit tier stories that get promoted to agitate people rather than promote thought.
Samuel Baker
I don't have the autism for this but have a (you) for doing this, and manually no less.
Nice takeaways, user. I think this video can appeal to a lot of folks that consume the daily news, maybe have them reflect on what it is they have been watching / getting so upset over.
Jonathan Thompson
I think scoping it to a single note per weekday made it sustainable.
Xavier Sullivan
Wow OP. Bump.
Jordan Bell
I don't know what r/videos is, but go to a major political channel like r/The_Donald or something. Those guys will run with it.
Lucas Parker
Godspeed autisticnon
Sebastian Powell
very interesting OP
Blake Rivera
I think I've been exhausting my other options first. I tried really hard to keep this pretty unbiased. Kind of worried if td takes it, it might lock the video in as being one sided. Not sure though.
Joshua Rodriguez
Getting anyone mainstream to pick it up in a meaningful way is going to be a challenge. I can think of a dozen places where it will take off but they will all get that stigma that you are looking to avoid.
Juan Brooks
Indeed. Things do feel a little more doable now that the page has thousands of views and some subscribers though.
Hudson Hall
I'm pulling for you user.
Tyler Jenkins
This is kind of interesting but I've also seen you spamming this thread a lot OP. I'll give you 3 more days of spamming this daily and if you continue after that I'm gonna have to shut it down.
Chase Evans
Yikes!
Dominic Morgan
>He's going to release the Emus! In all honesty, I think tonight or tomorrow you're going to have to decide if you want to let this peter out or hype it on mainstream conservative sites like Breitbart or td. Do you make these threads during primetime or only late at night like this?
Jack Torres
Generally it's been late night.
Jaxon Murphy
Also while I see conservative sites as the easier in road, are there any liberal ones that might find this interesting?
Justin Sullivan
I'd try this again tomorrow at 5pm Eastern, the board is a lot faster then. Honestly, I don't visit really any liberal websites aside from the news stations like MSNBC and NPR. I think the biggest problem is that this project really lends itself to "fake news" and all of the connotations thereof. Not that I'm saying you're trying to go that direction, just that reading the headlines really makes mainstream news look incredibly retarded.
If you really want to put your skills to use OP, make a website notating the time stamp every time a mainstream media outlet bashes Trump. Should be several hundred pages long each month.
Colton Cook
This is not a big story, no one fucking cares about this it is click bait bs and yoi fell for it. I imagine you have a lot of shitty articles thay you picked out as most important
Colton Hill
I think you'll get a lot more traction. It's real Jow Forums hours right now.
Jonathan Gomez
Actually thinking about it, just put the youtube link in the Drudge tip box on his site. He seems to post shit like this all of the time.
Jaxson Lewis
The point was that the media was leading every 8pm EST opinion show with this story that night. Every one of his headlines was the "outrage of the day" on that particular day.
Christian White
Ok so its not a major news story YOU deem is big as you say in OP, but whayever MSM says is big and cover ad nauseam on tv
Adrian Powell
If this is the case keep it up I guess it’s all bullshit private companies fighting for viewers and ad dollars
Jace Lewis
I'm not OP. I'm up in the air about who he really is and what his real goals are to be honest, but he did label every outrage of the night for each day that Tucker, Maddow, and whoever is on CNN covered ad nauseum that day.
Easton Cruz
Like I said, I follow a lot if US news. Each sticky note is distilled down from an amalgamation of sources. They include fox CNN msnbc slate thehill mediaite npr drudge mostly. It's just whatever seemed to me to be sucking up the most air. Obviously I'm just one user, but I tried my best to capture the biggest one each say.
Hunter Lopez
Based on what I remember from that year you did just that.
Hudson Perez
you should be looking at the top posts of r/worldnews, r/politics and r/news as well. Millions and millions of people see that every day
Jason Watson
Send this to rush Limbaugh
Joshua Reed
As sources? I do, but they're generally linking a story from one of the places I mentioned. Good point though.
Juan Cox
You'd have to hijack a comment to be able to be effective doing this though.
Noah Anderson
Good work OP.
Asher Moore
Just wanted to say, this is so fascinating. Seeing it in one video really takes you back to the year and how the news cycle ebbs and flows. I also really love the music choice, especially the song that plays a little after 5:00. Incredible video. Its interesting what seems so important at the time and what is virtually forgotten now.
Charles White
and that song that starts after 8 minutes is really reflective. theres a powerful effect when just seeing the headlines, day after day, with these songs on top
Brody Myers
Thanks so much for those comments. I know the videos long but I'm glad to hear you had a bit of an experience with it. Very interesting takeaways.
I think you really get what I might've been going for. Also the music is just from the YouTube free library but thought was fitting: 4 songs by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena: trips, sweet as honey, a walk in space, & hot heat
Wasted That's the thing, and the reason why I'm in this thread again. I totally remember these ridiculous stories and how they just got memory holed right away. It's kind of funny.
Jaxon Cox
tried my best. at least it's legible mostly yeah?
Justin Anderson
user, please don't take this the wrong way, but I want to ask you a question or two. What's your goal in disseminating this video? What do you hope to accomplish with having people see this? I ask this because reading your posts you don't come across as someone that posts here. How long have you been on Jow Forums? Are you fairly new here and that's why you're putting this up every night? You're getting dangerously close to where that 9chan fag is with spamming. Don't take it the wrong way, I'm just curious about what you want to accomplish and your posts just seem kind of "off" if you know what I mean.
Parker Flores
I lurk mostly, but I've been here for years. My main hope was to get as many eyes on it as I can and get some feedback. I feel like there's really something to this longitudinal study of the news. I also think that the time gap helps significantly when talking about this stuff. It erases a lot of the high blood pressure people got when the stories were still swirling around and helps you see things a little more clearly. Writing it down 2 years ago also gives the archive more authority than a random user posting and saying hey, member that time Kelly Ann kneeled on a couch?
Everytime I've reposted it, people have told me to repost it again so they can catch it the next day or get more eyes on it, so that's what I've been doing. The feedback I have been getting has mostly been positive and reaffirming, so I wanted to keep it going a bit longer. Recognize the spam worries and I'll just have to dial it back.
Michael Garcia
No worries user, I'm in another thread and it made me paranoid. I like your video and I want more eyes on it. Would you be comfortable if I forwarded it on to some old boomers I know who may or may not repost it on Facebook or forward it?
Robert Roberts
Did you do 2018 as well?
Dominic White
Sure I would be comfortable with it. I would appreciate it if anyone shared it. You might be surprised to see the wide range of reactions it seems to get. Just try not to tell them what to think about it before they watch it.
I'm just going to forward it on to a person I know who is more connected than I am with the title only. It'll be interesting to see the reaction I get.
Ethan Martin
I did and am still doing it today. Bob Kraft was Friday's sticky note, but let's not talk about that very much for a few years. Not sure when the 2018 video needs to happen. If things were to get some traction I could be inclined to release it sooner, but there's definitely value in letting some time pass.
I agree, but 2018 is over now.... It's still fresh enough in many minds that it might have more impact? I'd like to see it at least, but no problem if you want to keep it secret for the time being.
Joshua Torres
I'll put it this way, I have a place that I think I'm going to send the video that has a voice, but I've never seen it posted here and I don't want to expose it. It's a news site/forum, but it's pretty good and behind a big paywall.
Thomas Evans
See that's the thing. It is still fresh. Not sure what the optimum cool off time is.
Jordan Ward
I get it, I'm rewatching your video and it's old enough now that I'm nodding, smiling or laughing depending on the card I'm looking at. I'm totally disassociated from any of those headlines right now, no emotion about them whatever. I want to see your 2018 because I see what you're trying to do, but I don't think it's a good idea to put them out right now.
Nathaniel White
spoilers, there might be a lot of sticky notes with stormy daniels written on them lol
Xavier Cox
I'd expect nothing less hahaha.
Nolan Williams
i have been documenting all the scandals surrounding trump, from pre election till now. all the email leaks, russian collusion hoax etc..basically all the lies the msm tried to peddle on us. all the fucking fake news reports like the nyt reporting kim jong building shit while forgeting to say its 2016 pictures... i have about 4k entries of articles from nyt wp hp politico the hill cnn... all articles containing lies that were proven fake in day or two..
i was doing this for roughly 3 hours every day for the last 2 years and i still dont know what to do exactly with this.. it would be nice to know someone would read a book like this or watch a video, but for me the important thing is just to document this even if it doesnt have an audience. i thought about doing a documentary but that would probably get me sued for using msm footage
I've wanted to do this same kind of thing only with Jow Forums threads but I never get a round tuit.
Carter Murphy
stop shilling your hw project faggot
Luke Russell
Interesting stuff user.
Jayden Garcia
Its the epitome of "orange man bad" They dont even have any enthusiasm left, it is robotic at this point. I have to wonder how these people have the energy to stay outraged for 2 years straight
Ryan Sanchez
Interesting idea. Don't know what to do with but it seems to have some kind of merit behind it.
Jacob Foster
This is why I can't leave this place
Carter Long
I briefly tried doing something similar but struggled as you are with how to present it. I'd considered doing something like a chronological blog, but you'd also benefit from having some sort of per-scandal timeline to show how they evolve and are eventually shown to be false. Maybe a giant gantt chart of your screenshots showing the chronology of each scandal in relation to all the others? Might make it easy to visualize how each scandal is created to cover up the fact the debunking of the previous one, and you could show how, long after they're debunked, they still are mentioned in news stories as though they're true. Just thinking out loud here.
