90% of the times is genetics, and by that i don't mean it's heredited, it's a random mutation, so it's really bad luck. One of the most frequent is Hypertrophic Cardiomiopathy (1 of 500-1000 people) , and often the first and only sign of it, it's sudden death while doing physical activity. However, it's very easy to diagnose, and the hearth can be transplanted. Others are pretty much undiagnoseable, unless you really suspect it (like the abovementioned Brugada). So do like me, don't think about it, there is nothing you can do to prevent it.

Nah, it's not increasing, we just tend to notice them much more, because everytime it happens to a young athlete or to an otherwise healty individuals it goes on the news (see the article that started this thread). People were much more fatalist and tolerant some decades ago, and death wasn't such a taboo.

The age is very variable, i've personally seen everything from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome, or cradle death) to 80+ year old people (althou in very old people is difficult to diagnose), but i'll say the average is from 20-25 to 40 years old, in non athletes mainly (because otherwise they get diagnosed before the event).
