Shotguns are actually great for "home defense" because the majority of engagements occur under 10 yards. Shotguns allow you to discharge without much thought as to what is behind your target, or walls. Firing off 5.56 in a panic will likely result in collateral damage to your neighbors.

Shotguns are mostly good for being cheap. They kick hard, have short effective range, and the ammunition is bulky and heavy, meaning you can't carry much of it. They do have amazing stopping power though, and at medium range, you can snap off very fast shots using the spread of buckshot to simplify aiming, which can be a big deal in combat. Trap shooting is terrific fun, too.

The right gun depends entirely on how you're going to fight, and your resources and skill level (or willingness to develop skill). A quality AR-15 is a good general-purpose fighting rifle, and should probably be the default. There are more rugged workalike options, but AR-15 parts availability is a major advantage. The other prime contender is a semi-automatic .308 (or other full-size cartridge): more range, more knockdown power, but also more recoil, so accurate repeating fire will be slower, and heavier ammo, so a smaller ammo supply. A scoped boltgun can make you an important asset to a team, though it's not a good way to defend yourself. A pistol-caliber carbine with compatible ammo for your sidearm can be an affordable, convenient alternative to an AR-15, at closer ranges, though it's generally inferior to an AR-15 in performance.

One option to give serious consideration to is a single-shot .50 BMG rifle (not as your first or only gun, or course). These stop trucks. They can even bag low-flying aircraft. It really depends on how you're fighting. No occupying force would want to deal with a population equipped with antimateriel rifles. Anyone in less than a tank would be in constant danger. One shot from cover, then sneak away.
