Haha thanks, I think Ill pass though on Southeast Asian quality steak. They do many many things right as far as food goes, but steak and beef are best left to a select few countries as you seem to already know.
Nha Trang is on the coast, Da Lat is the old capital, before it was Hanoi or HCM, back when they had a King.
In HCM, go to District 7, find Pizza 4Ps. Excellent hole in the wall joint owned by a Japanese guy that makes his own cheeses. Probably the best 'Italian authentic' pizza you can get in the country, if not all of SE Asia.
The first McD's in the country was put in HCM a couple years ago. It was a big deal at the time, kinda like the first McD's in the USSR back in the day.
Do you know people there? Anyone that has friends/family in the country side? You want to go out there some time and get fucked up with the old men, drinking rice wine and watching chicken fights and eating the really culty food that never makes it out of the country.
Really want to know someone who has family over there, that's the easiest way, unless you are just going to do all the typical tourist shit.
For your first traveling experience, I'd recommend checking out Europe. You can take the rail system around for cheap. Round trip flights from Minneapolis to Amsterdam for cheap, like under $500.
This is my first time in Vietnam, but as far as Thailand goes (been three times now), Bangkok is an awesome city and if you are a city person you will love it, has an aweomse cyberpunk Blade Runner aesthetic, great public transit, awesome temples, great food (not just Thai, but from everywhere, especially the Japanese is highly reccomended), excelent world class "massage" shops, amazing temples, comfy and word class shopping malls, as a Westerner you are never too out of your comfort zone there either. Theres Pattaya beach if you want non stop cheap sex and to party. Theres Chang Mai for a more local, laid back experience up near the mountains in northern Thailand with all the fixings of being a city (though nowhere near as crazy as Bangkok). Stay away from Pukhet and southern Thailand in general, tourist trap central and the most unfriendly region of the country.
As far as Vietnam goes, Im only in Ho Chi Minh city for now, but the District 1 area is without a doubt the best area of the city (the closer to the river the better).

I turned 24 in Ho Chi Min City and traveled as far north as Nah Trang and west to Can Tho. It's a beautiful country with kind people and awesome food. It is piss poor and dirty as hell though. But geographically speaking, it makes complete sense why the US could not make war there. You can buy a condo in a neighboring district in one of the high rises for like 75k. I have a large house about 25km south of you lol. It wasn't cheap, but property prices have done nothing but go up. Also, be careful with the ATMs. Gangs go around at night and hack them, putting card skimmers on them. Try to do currency exchange at the airport next time, and use the credit card where you can.
When you go back to the USA, get your motorcycle license. Then you can buy a cheap moped next time and ride that around.

I have a Cambodian friend who says the same. I've eaten sugar cane myself; I still have the now dried out cane. There wasn't anything to it beyond the sweetness. It was like eating fiberous sugar cubes. I can't really imagine the appeal. Same for certain types of beets. I grew these curious 'target beets' because they were alternate rings of red and white once cut. I prepared them, and they looked super interesting. It wasn't cheap, even thought it's kinda in the countryside. Part of the reason is the size, it's 6 bedroom 4 bathroom. My wife's family has a business over there, and multiple properties. I had to stay there for a while, and do some paperwork, but yes, generally it's very difficult for a foriegner, because you can't get a loan (unless you can get a bank account). Took a lawyer and some help from a friend who's in the government there to get that sorted. They don't want problems with people laundering money through their banking system, so they are dodgy about foreigners having accounts there.
