It´s because we gave up our border control with the promise of a powefull shengen outside Border supported by all member states.
We got open borders instead.
And everything the EU does is like this.

Firstly, people shouldn't mix up the EU with Europe. I'm sick of the EU doing this.

Secondly, we have a civil service that have vested interests within the EU. Dominic Grieve received Legion d'honneur, Mr Grieve is an arch remainer that has been trying to undo the vote. His cohorts have businesses and financial exposure within the EU. They are compromised.

Thirdly, we have a PM that campaigned to remain and has managed to silence leavers in the government.

Fourthly, the EU threatens and is nasty with language, it doesn't really phase the people here that much, other than cement the positions held and convert more people toward wanting to leave, so if anything the rhetoric and language/threats coming from the EU's side is a good thing for us as it helps our cause even more.

Fifthly, as others have said, they want to see what happens to the UK. The backstop is a red herring being used as a distraction, no one cares about Ireland (not even the Irish do). The problem lies in the entire withdrawal agreement, it was written by Olly Robbins and Theresa May, Olly Robbins is a communist and staunch EU supporter, he is a civil servant and shouldn't be advising Theresa May, he should be implementing government policy, not influencing or writing it.

The war that is it hand is on many fronts, we have quislings within our government that are selling us out for a shekel. The EU has never played nice and never will, the Article 50 withdrawal text talks about maintaining close/good relations with countries that leave, yet all Barnier and the EU have been saying is about how they want to "make Brits pay" or "punish".
