I'm just insanely curious how Pence said it would be launched before end of year. It's not like he would announce something like this unless it was already planned to.
Anyways, I think regardless of how ridiculous it sounds. With the government getting its hands on space travel before anyone else, we are already in the timeline where we can possibly see space travel as a commodity and new possibilities such as asteroid mining, living on planets, etc. can be explored.
I would argue though, that it would take a lot of time. But the face that we are doing it first can influence other nations, creating a joint cause to forward humanity outside of just this planet. That will introduce some redpills I guess, making people less for this world and more towards other things.
