The story behind Kashmir is this:
After the British pulled out of India, the countries was divided into princedoms. Quickly the princedoms organized themselves into two blocs, Hindi and Muslim. The minor religions that were neither really Hindi or really Muslim, sided with one or the other because they knew they wouldn't last a minute as tiny independent states. The Muslims coalesced into Pakistan, and the Hindus into India. Kashmir had a Muslim majority population, but a Hindi prince. As the prince and the head of the government of Kashmir, he opted to join India, but ~70% of the population wanted to join Pakistan. Right after the prince threw his lot in with India, he abdicated. Both Pakistan and India rushed to occupy Kashmir Initially Pakistan held most of the territory, but it was indefensible and so they "gave" part of it to China, knowing India wouldn't go to war with China over it.
Now today, both sides are stalemated and each occupies territory they managed to grab back then. India wants Kashmir because the former government agreed to join India Pakistan wants Kashmir because the majority of the population wants to join Pakistan, also Kashmir's hold's a vital portion of Pakistan's water supply Pakistan won't honor the former princedom's agreement, India won't allow a referendum for the people to vote who to join. China is left holding onto a piece of Kashmir it doesn't really want, but they're doing it as a favor to Pakistan, which is their balance against India.
