See above. Yes, you do not have to read "it all", but a certain foundation is great, secondary literature can help, but also blind you. I always try to read primary sources first, think about the terms of the author and THEN read/watch others. As an exercise, I "argue" with their insights. My feeling is: most academics are either impotent or totally aware of not being able to write what they want.
