good, we should be trying to eliminate theuneccisary jobs that currently only exist because people require employment to survive. Then we can assess the actual labor need of society in man hours per year per capita, and figure out what to do from there. Socialism would just have everyone then work fewer hours but there is more profit for capitalists to have full employment with a UBI for everyone else.

Remember money is fiction, there is only the production needed to support the population, and the population. All economic systems are just attempts to figure out what and how these things are.

Now the product of your work is detached from the actual work you do, and you are compensated for it indirectly through wages. Lower income people and welfare dependent people will waste it, it's as simple as that and then they're left behind with everything being more expensive now.

It's also going to be hard to constantly match UBI to inflation and determine where to draw the line, people will always be unhappy with the amount.

Finland tried universal basic income and people didn't like it because "everybody" had the chance to get money. Money doesn't have anything to do with the work people are willing to do, but, more so the power people have over others for having it. If everybody could have money, even if everybody could have work, it would take away the power others have to pretend they'll give others money when in reality they only give them lunch for the day. This is a constant issue which universal basic income would solve, but, it would also piss off a lot of farmers because most of them are the ones who complain about it while they get a free government paycheck for "not growing food" on their land they earned through minorities getting red lined by the banks back in the day.

The benefit that cash handouts have over benefit-based welfare is that you can scale it in such a way that recipients are not penalized for being productive. In a means-tested benefit-based welfare system there is a point where a recipient makes another dollar but loses many more in benefits and therefore actually goes backwards. A negative income tax scheme can avoid this. If by "work" you mean "doesn't create welfare traps" then yes, a well-implemented UBI can definitely "work."
