When I went through the fire academy, most of the people were white. Of course we had people of color and women, but a lot of them dropped out either because they failed academically or because they were physically incapable of performing their duties. What was left was a class made up of mostly white/hispanic dudes to continue on with training.

Women make great fire fighters. They keep the fire hall clean and cook pretty well. Most places are volunteer as well. Women are good with non demanding tasks. Keeping SCBA gear in order, coordinating training, getting grants, getting gear, testing pumps and hoses, they can navigate, run dispatch, and so on.
Every light task they take from a fit and able man makes things easier on scene.
