it's not what you think HIV attacks your bodies immune cells. what happens is an HIV infection starts dramatically destroying your body's ability to fight infection, but HIV cannot entirely remove your body's immune system (specifically the targeted cells) because then it would not be able to reproduce (like a predator overpredating and then starving). after a given amount of time of infection and propagation, HIV and your immune cells reach a balance point (one that drastically compromises your immune capabilities but allows HIV to persist). the problem is then that most efforts to cure disease relies on your body having a certain amount of immune capability, and so curing HIV at that point is seemingly impossible i don't know about this case but from the last person "cured" what they did was they knew he was infected long before the person's immune cell count dropped, and treated him then, thus preventing the HIV from propagating fast enough to prevent his immune system from eliminating it. it merely was a matter of having treatment fast enough. it's kinda like removing cancer if it's caught incredibly early or being able to recover from a bullet to the heart if you receive immediate treatment: you made it through, but it's not like medical science has cured cancer or made people immune to bullets because the fundamental problems of those ailments haven't been overcome. same thing here with HIV
