Check out the glorious STEN. Lovely piece of British engineering ingenuity. Mattress springs basically all came from the same factory in Sheffield during WW2, the fence posts from the council in all the major towns, cities, villages all had 9mm bore steel poles as a standard. Dude comes along, puts them together with a bit of pressed plate steel and makes this bad boy. The Mk 1 proved to be a problem with Commando units as the trigger would sometimes get stuck in the pressed plate steel. Not to see a weapon go to waste, due to the side loading magazine, the Commandos started using them as grenades. You would jam the trigger in and throw the gun into a room. It would basically rotate in a circle. A machine gun grenade. It became so useful, some British Commandos carried Mk 1's and II's at the same time. Anyone can put one together without a CNC machine. Even the German army tried to replicate it.
