I'll tell you this. FOIA is usually a dead end, but worth a shot. It's easier than that.
1. OSINT: Read the news and archive everything. Keep notes and notice patterns.
2. Look at other countries. They do the same things as us, but they leak or declassify different aspects.
3. FOIA everybody involved. Obviously get the help of a lawyer, but don't just FOIA the FBI. Request the same documents from the FBI, Treasury Department, SOCOM, etc. Chat up the PRB types and send Christmas cards. Afterwards overlap the documents they send you and try do figure out the rest.
1 is cheap, but takes skill. 2 can have a language barrier. 3 will take years and you'll likely get breadcrumbs, but it's the best if you're good.

It is UNHEARD OF for an official investigation of this caliber to "leak" crime scene photos, which gives me shivers to think about. They released the images to Jow Forums either because some unlikely Jow Forumstard was a photographer or because they were showing us what they wanted us to see. I can't even imagine the security involved with crime scene photos, but that there is a chance for these things to leak seems nearly impossible. Part of why I think this is the "interviews" with the crazy brother. He used the word "Comped" and it became a meme. Another way to look at the word "comped" is compromised. IF these guys were spook weapons dealers, it would be a very casual way to report to the people who just put them on burn notice that they were compromised. I don't trust the statistics that are involved with being a "professional gambler", and no casino is in business to lose money, and this would include comping rooms and food to someone who is making bank off of them. You should look up their Dad. He was a bank robber and prison escapee who managed to make the FBI most wanted list. ALL of these people have an opportunity to integrate into a criminal lifestyle. Very rarely does one man rob a bank, escape from jail and end up being wanted by the FBI without help. Speculate, that I can do. Explain is an evaluation of sufficiency of proof, and I don't think any of us non-spooks here will ever know for sure.
I got the sense in the John threads at the time that the guy was legit. He probably wasn't aware of the deepest levels of the plot (standard opsec would make that unlikely anyway), but it was a big op that had been planned for a long time, and people love to talk. Also, since the real event (imo the mini-nuke 9/11) was foiled, thank God, the consequences John was predicting may have been 100% accurate and simply not had the cattle-stampede political push to get them done so they were never revealed.
That doesn't mean that a great way to manipulate the smart but naive (like Jow Forums is - see the Q nonsense for proof of that) is to "leak" info before an op happens. Then when the operation occurs, the "leaker" now has instant credibility among questioners - allowing those questioners to be safely misled and the op protected.
So I believe John was a real person trying to warn people with what he knew. That he knew only one level of the story is consistent with an op that big having multiple levels of cover story and misdirection. Had the mini-nuke (which I believe would have "failed" and just released a small amount of radioactive material - protecting the (((valuable real estate))) but allowing the MSM to scream "NK AND IRAN TRY TO NUKE US!!!) succeeded, we may well have had a national push for the ubiquitous body and package scanners John predicted and we know the oligarchy wants.

Our fiction is full of high intrigue between nation states resulting in bloody, covert actions in public places. Often the heroes ride off unacknowledged with some hastily arrange cover story, and the audience chuckles. I doubt this sort of thing happens all of the time, or nearly as often as most conspiracy theorists think, but given the last 20 years of batshit geopolitics it isn't too farfetched for me to imagine this is the best cover the government could slap onto a barely averted disaster.
