peasants were sort of protected in feudalism because they were a source of wealth. land is useless without workers, so you don't conquer land and kill the population, you just became the ruler who gets stuff produced by people. like if you conquered an electronics factory, you wouldn't go around thrashing the machines in that factory. you just appropriate it. there was a sort of social agreement in feudalism: peasants work and live modestly but are protected, aristocracy don't work and they get the produce but they have an obligation of fighting and protecting peasants and risking their lives in battle. when this agreement was disrupted peasant rebellions ensued. when feudalism was abolished during french revolution one of the first measures of the new governement was first time ever mass military conscription, as there was no aristocracy left to go to war. so after feudalism peasant both work and go to war, while fat merchans sit at home and fuck boipucci in satanic rituals
