Life long Californian here. Moved to Central Oregon in September. Would have preferred Montana, but have to take it one step at a time.

Of the hundreds of Californian clients, friends, and acquaintances I spoke to leading up to the move, not a *single one* said getting out of there was a bad idea. Easily 75% said it was a good idea. A few said "take me with you!"

California is so hard to understand not only because of the regional/geographical differences (Redding vs LA vs SF could be different nation states) But also because of massive economic inequality. In the three biggest cities especially (LA Greater Area, Bay Area, Sac Greater Area) You can go 15 -30 minutes down the freeway and go from 700 SQ. Feet slums with pit bulls in the front yard to entire towns of 5000+ SQ foot McMansions on the top of a hill looking over some pristine body of water. The in betweens of the middle class are shrinking fast, and they used to give the state its soul. As someone from one of the aformentioned rich areas, even the big obnoxious McMansions built in the 70's 80's are being absolutely overshadowed by the modernist monstrosities taking up ever more space on the top of a hill somewhere. The inequality is not slowing down. The rich are overwhelmingly white, trickled with Indians and Asians, but above all else happy. Perhaps blind to the growing discontent in the "lower" areas.

The show 'Real Bro's of Simi Valley' exaggerates but accurately Captures the youth culture in the rich, white, and politically conservative pockets of the state (with a more southern california flavor). While these people vote Republican, they are still largely liberal in their personal values.
