I find it laughable that people try to equate modern Judaism with historic Judaism. Christ was a Jew, but not in any sense of the modern understanding. Back then, there were four sects: Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots, and Essenes. They all had their issues, and the split was caused because of the continuously fracturing of the nation of Israel. Psychologically, I would think that what made the Pharisees behave and act like they did was a byproduct of not wanting to be exiled again. In their rush to make sure it never again happened, they lost track of what the law and commandments truly meant.

In a sense, Judaism today is an eventual byproduct of following laws out of fear and losing the meaning of them. They care more about the laws than what lies behind them. The same can be said of a lot of modern Christians. Given 2000 years, a lot of denominations would likely become what judaism is today.
