Catholics who observe Lent do so in order to remember Jesus's 40 days of suffering in the desert. It's a time for Catholics to pray and (hopefully) learn to become better people through penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, and self-denial. Even if you remove the whole jew-on-a-stick aspect of it, the idea is quite commendable.
