Taleb's problem is that he equates success with money, etc. and his entire point rests on the fact that IQ poorly correlates with income. It's most representative of success of soldiers in the military, apparently, and he suggests this means that IQ is about rule following.

Of course, this is a fallacious argument. Rich people are not universally smart or clever, despite what they want to portray themselves as. This is evident for anyone that has spent a even a modicum of time interacting with societal elites.

His other point is that IQ is just test-taking and not related to actual tasks one wants to perform. Of course, if you measure performance of some particular task it will be a better metric of success at that task. The point of IQ tests are a general cognitive problem-solving assay, in that it can be a proxy for a variety of exercises that require lateral thinking. We don't expect this metric is going to perfectly correlate with every intellectual task. So he basically misses the entire point here.

Basically, I think he's butthurt because he's very pro eastern Mediterranean - and they rank low on IQ at a group scale. His arguments, while seemingly legitimate, are largely vacuous in their reasoning when examined critically.

He has good criticisms of it on technical grounds and he's right to call out the IQ fetishists who make very weak claims with a greater degree of certainty than is warranted.

But he also has misconceptions and there are holes in some of his arguments. He appears to consider academics as examples of high IQ people but the average IQ of academics is roughly 130. Is that high IQ? Plus we need to distinguish between fields where peer approval is given more weight and fields like math and engineering where you have to be able to do the work and there's less room for ambiguity. The more ambiguity the more less intelligent people, being greater in numbers, can hold back their superiors by withholding peer approval.

I suspect this is also a large part of why there is a failure to see IQ correlating with success. If we broke that down more granularly we might see that it isn't high IQ failing to give someone an edge and rather a communication barrier.

This is actually a decent take. IQ is a measurement of capacity not quality. No one achieves anything just because they have a high IQ.

Assuming grit is distributed independently of IQ, that could explain why not all high IQ people are successful. But if you have grit, IQ will take you further. Assuming grit and IQ has a positive correlation we would expect most high IQ people to be successful. If this is not what we see we can assume that this is not the case. One could assume that high IQ individuals fall into the early trap of having everything too easy, which is detrimental to grit. I think this could model the behaviour sufficiently.

There is nuance in this regard though. Dr John could have a higher IQ (though not leagues higher) but lack other qualities that simply defy all measurement. This is where I think Taleb has a point and where IQ fetishists overplay the importance of IQ. I don't believe emotional intelligence, for isntance, exists as such and it can't be measures and yet there are intuitive dimensions to human cognitions that exist which we can't measure. Grit in itself probably depends on multiple variables. But I think it is useful in that it is something you can see as a phenomenon. "Hard work" is a thing, you know. Why someone has grit, and someone else doesnt, is harder to answer. I think it could be down to winner/loser psychology too, especially when you see your work paying off for you as you leave your peers behind. Not everyone can be feel that invigoration. It is limited supply.

IQ is an attempt to quantify how intelligent someone is relative to the population (White Population). It is not intelligence in itself but of course people like to use any flaws in IQ testing to say that their are not differences in intelligence.

If you consider that high then fine but then you absolutely must classify the people with IQs like 150, 165, 175 and so forth separately. They are completely different animals from people with IQs of around 130. And the higher you go there is no evidence of diminshing returns and also of exclusion from professional fields for reasons other than incompetence. It gets more complicated at the higher echelons and by using the blanket term high IQ things get painted with too broad a brush for meaningful analysis.
