1) Space is not a complete void. As you move away from the gravitational pull of Earth atmosphere becomes progressively thinner, but space itself is not a complete void.
2) Combustion engines work by propelling matter from the rear, thus pushing the craft forward. This doesn't require oxygen and I'm not sure why you think it does. The lion's share of the work is leaving atmosphere, once that is done less work is required to keep the craft moving as the pull of gravity weakens. It really isn't that difficult of a concept to grasp at it's most basic, and any more in depth questions can be easily answered with a Google search.
