Grad school for STEM is often paid for by grants, student-teaching and research compensation. If your tuition isn't being covered you're doing something wrong. Living expenses is another thing...lots of variation there.

Here is the deal. The uni I went to has a 13-credit policy. ANY CLASS you take OVER 13 credits is FREE but you are still paying a standard tuition fee and it doesn't matter if you're an undergrad or a graduate.

Graduates work part time but the money they earn goes toward their debts. I don't know if they can take that money instead and do the traditional "I'll pay for my education loans AFTER I graduate." Every graduate I came across did this part time work, had rich parents, and/or got loans and scholarships to pay. And also, they had jobs elsewhere; part time at the coffee shop or a full time menial job.

It's not visas, dumbshit. It's people who get useless arts PhDs and expect to be hired back into academia. STEM has almost zero issue unless you're some cock. Industry literally comes to recruit you.

There are grants and work opportunities, yeah.

But we have way more students than there is money and opportunities to go around.

When the economy took a downswing everyone told people that the period of unemployment after school would tank them. So they all took out loans and flooded graduate programs. This of course, just made graduate degrees worthless, too.

Funny thing is that I make as much as university faculty teaching high schoolers engineering in a cowtown. I'm not even an engineer. I have a BS in Biology.

The industry did care, the problem was migrants with credentials that didn't reflect reality. Now we have over saturated this market with them that most degrees have become meaningless.

There can not be a statistically significant amount of Mexican and Caribbean doctors in the USA, because there are only two states that will allow Mexican and Caribbean doctors to do their residencies: New York and Texas. It's more likely that you get experienced doctors from Mexico coming to the USA than dumb overflow who couldn't get into US medical school.

That being said, maybe we should relax admission standards for med school if we have a shortage so that we can give people an AMERICAN education.

A PhD is meant to be a hyper specialized focus in a specific field. You get a PhD in Drug Development, Biochemistry of Chemotherapeutics, or Geology with a focus on petroleum exploitation, then you should have no problem getting a job starting at 90k.

PhDs do most of the course work in the first year, then there is no course work or it is some specialized short course. If you have a GPA of less than 3.6 after the first year they would kick you out of any reputable school.

If you are in a lab with good funding and in STEM, usually you will get paid a stipend to work on a side project in the lab (which is really just part of your PhD) or do some TA stuff.
The bullshit degrees usually do not have a lot of funding or ability to produce research, so there are very little stipends.
There are schools that charge tuition for PhDs too, you can get a Masters in Design, or Fashion for $120,000 in a 3 year bull shit degree.

These PhDs are most likely the mid to low tier ones from average to bad schools who probably shouldn't have been conferred.

The supervisors who do these PhDs usually have no industry funding or industry based projects and are reliant on internal grants or government handouts. These people are glorified teachers and probably shouldn't be academics.

It's predatory that people are suckered into these programs, but usually the ego of the people involved gets to their head and they don't quit at the bachelors or masters stage where it's still possible to get out unscathed.

This knowledge is common knowledge in academic circles so these idiots have no one to blame other than themselves.
