It's more of the fact that Trump cannot pivot to his populist message in the Rust Belt states (which is where Trump won the election by less than 100,000 votes combined). Sanders is against the same trade deals that screwed over the people in these states, and that's why I would give the advantage to Sanders to keep those states blue.

Against gulf war, against iraq war, hell, for most of his career he wasn't even a dem. And most of the issues he champions now are popular because HE championed and pioneered them, not because they were popular ideas he jumped aboard on.

Bernie capitulated pretty hard when there was ample evidence he had been cheated. How effective would he even be, if he were lucky enough to be prez ? Trump is fairly normie and is crippled. A socialist has no chance to enact their platform.

It depends on how hard he goes with the socialism, and identity politics. If he goes out there and goes full feel the bern shirtless singing the USSR anthem democratic socialist, then he is going to tank. If he walks back that stuff, and says "I campaigned for civil rights, and I want to assure the rich pay their fair share. I do not want socialism." he is going to win the suburban vote, since he can't lose the hard left urban vote. If he makes it to the point where he is going up against Trump without having the bang the socialism drum to hard.

2016 might have, since the conservatives were worried he'd not be in line with their policies, and occasional cortex had not happened yet.

Identity politics doesn't appeal to rust belt voters and the DNC should be smart enough to realize this now that Hillary "popular votes" Clinton is no longer at the helm.
