That area is notorious for being extremely dangerous to swim in. Like I said before, a cop with a fucking oxygen tank drowned during a training exercise in the same area not too long before this happened. This was way before the falls, right by the peace bridge in buffalo. The niagara is usually safe to swim in , there's even a public beach on grand island where you can swim in the river. That was just a particularly dangerous spot, I think it has to do with the breakwall

When I was a kid we used to jump off a little walk bridge in Chippawa and swimming hurriedly to a little cement ledge to get out.

The current is the strongest I have ever experienced in my life, and you could swim against it, but not for long (unless you're michael phelps)---that's why we didn't fuck around too much by swimming far out or swimming against the current too much.
