Venezuela has heavy, sour crude not unlike Canadian tar sands. And we are about the only nation that can economically refine it. US oil markets are now almost totally dominated by light, sweet crude produced domestically onshore, and any demand for heavy crude can easily be met by Canada.
Venezuela is also on the hook to U.S. bondholders (read: American retirement funds) for something like $80 billion dollars. This was supposed to be repaid through returns on investment in oil infrastructure, but once it was nationalized, they gave every indication that they were not going to pay back that investment.
Now we're going to collect, by hook or by crook, and if they refuse to play ball... they will starve in the dark.
