I was a waiter/bartender/front house mngr. most of college. And I worked my ass off sucking customer dick for good money. And when the occasional customer would stiff me, or tip 5% I could usually figure out what I fucked up - late with a bill, food not 100% served together, (aka same trip) noticed a fork on the ground I didn't catch and replace without being asked.

So I have HUGE standards when I tip now. You want big bucks, I'll spend em, but you better compliment my shaft and cradle the balls. This is a fair arrangement, and I appreciate it. There is a reason it is called a "SERVE"r

No tipping should never be mandatory because that completely defeats the purpose of tipping. I honestly don't understand why tipping is so hard for people to understand. I think tipping is a great idea in theory but it doesn't work in practice because there are so many fucking idiots that don't get the concept.

A repeat customer that never tips despite the service will get bad service, and a customer that tips generously when the service is good, will get employees fighting over each other to service him better than the others.

The reason why this doesn't work is that most people are not able to be a part of this system in an intelligent way. You either have the people who never tip, because they are cheap, or you have the people that always tip, because they feel like they have to. So the service employees don't become better at service, and everyone just sees tipping as a scam restaurant owners came up with so they don't have to pay as much.

TL:DR Tipping is a good system, but humans are too stupid to handle it properly.

My experience with food service has been that, outside of nicer establishments, waiters don't perform as they should in order to earn a tip. You want a tip? Then when my water glass gets to be 20% full I expect you to drop what you're doing and refill it. I expect you to come around to my table, regularly, to make sure i dont need anything. I expect you to have a working understanding of the menu and to be able to explain to me, in detail, about every dish available, including specials. I dont receive that service at places like bonefish, red lobster, etc, so why would I ever leave a tip for the waiters that work there?

Tipping isn't a problem among whites in a high trust society.
