Backstory - Recently found out that my best friend's (30+yrs) father was a 'football coach' and molested a boy in the year below me (small school, everyone knew each other). This kid was one of the nicest little kids you can imagine. Of all the kids to become a naughty kid, he'd be the last person you'd choose. He went 'off the rails' and at the time everyone assumed he was a 'wrong'n'. 20+ years later and it turns out this 7yr old was groomed and abused for over 6 years. Feared for his life, turned to drugs and attempted suicide. Once he was able to understand that he was completely innocent and taken advantage of, he told friends and later the police. The police found another victim and thanks to him and said pedophile is now serving 16years where he can't hurt anybody.

My story - I'm 90+% certain that my closest friend for 30+ years was abused by his own father and I didn't have the slightest idea. I knew he had issues but never thought about 'that'. We had extremely personal conversations and looking back I think he might have been inches away from telling me. It's possible he did tell me in a coded way but I was too dumb to realise at the time.

He moved away before the charges against his father and we didn't keep much contact. We were so close that we never had to text each other before, we'd just go round to each others houses and so when we moved away it seemed weird to text each other because we never did it. Wed text other people but if we wanted to talk, we'd always do it the old fashioned way. When the charges came out I didn't put 2+2 together. I txted him to say i can't imagine what he and the family are going through and to let me know if he wants to go for a drink. He was extremely appreciative but understandably didn't want to talk much. We've probably texted each other 3 times about random events but never mentioned the elephant in the room.

Since then I've realised Im 90% sure he was abused. I don't have the first clue on how to ask him that question but I need to know.

I know the prison that his father is in and I think I could get a visit. I find it easier to go and meet his dad and ask him if he abused his son rather than ask my friend outright.
