Aircraft carriers aren't particularly relevant. China has always been a land-based power. Only recently they made the decision to build a relevant navy, and they don't necessarily want or need to surpass the US in this area.

First comes economic advantage, then military, and finally political/diplomatic. That's how it was with the US, and Britain before them.
And China hasn't even surpassed the US in economy yet, though they will, and after that the other two steps will come. I'd give it 60 years for all 3 steps.
