Britain went to war with Germany because they had a treaty with Poland that ONLY covered if GERMANY attacked. The treaty made with Poland said the UK would defend Poland from Germany and Germany only.

I mean, during most of the war Britain refrained from opening a western front Europe in the hope Germany and the USSR would knock each other out so Britain could swoop in and take all of it. Obviously that didn't work.
