I liked Yang before it was popular, the reality of automation is inescapable.
1. Universal basic income will only raise the cost of other goods and services. This happened with the emergence of women in the work force. Because families now had two incomes, certain goods such as education and real estate rose tremendously as a result, because companies were able to charge more. Therefore UBI which would entitle every couple to an additional 24k salary would only encourage certain industries to charge a higher rate, as they know they can afford it. Such scenarios were discussed in elizabeth warrens work at harvard.
2. Theres no indication it would increase productivity; women in particular might drop out of the work force in response to additional monetary support. While it might seem paradoxical that at one point women entering the workforce was negative and them leaving was also negative, these can both be true for separate reasons and for separate classes. Women of menial low paying jobs such as secretaries and the like for example may decide that their jobs are simply too menial to be worth it, are less likely to be invested in their jobs and thus might quit en masse lowering productivity. Middle class women who are highly skilled and are still working however are unlikely to abandon their jobs. The purchasing patterns of middle class women could therefore disproportionately effect them and their families negatively under UBI, given that they are the ones who purchase lifestyle goods such as real estate and education more than the lower class.
3. UBI would greatly increase the incentive for immigration. Such a system would be particularly difficult to maintain under americas current immigration system. Not only would babies born on american soil be guaranteed citizenship, they would now also be guaranteed a salary for life. America would become the preeminent welfare state of the world. The democrats (who would require a majority for us to consider UBI) would likely only lessen the stringency for citizenship.
4. UBI has actually never been attempted despite whatever shilling the assholes on this board may tell you. Experiments in Alaska and Africa were in small scale instances, and often applicants in the african example were vetted for eligibility. In such experiments the subjects also knew that the monetary gain was of short duration. Hence theres no reason to expect that a similar outcome would occur for infinite duration for lifetime benefits.
5. Theres no evidence that UBI could even be paid for. Hillary Clinton herself considered running on the platform, but in her memoir stated that "we could not get the numbers to work". Andrew yang claims the plan will work with approximately 2 trillion, but looking at number of americans 18 and older ~250 million x12k/year the total amount comes out closer to 3 trillion. Yang asserts that the bill can be covered by value added tax, but this posits that the economy will continue to grow indefinitely. Should the economy ever stop growing this balance will be disrupted. He also claims that the current disability claims will partially cover it. But it seems unlikely that people who are on welfare/the poor will go along with any system that opts out current disability recipients, because then the most common recipients of UBI would be the upper 85% percent of society, which is not really in line with what UBI is trying to do. Andrew himself has said that they would not necessarily "prohibit people on welfare from receiving benefits.
6. As a corollary for the last point a 3 trillion increase to the current united states budget which is 4 trillion which be nearly a doubling of the total united states expenditures. about 66% of the US budget is welfare programs especially social security. No-one who is currently in social security is going to vote in a system that opts them out of money. Therefore any UBI benefits will likely be on top of social security leaving a large percentage of the US budget still in place, making an inflation of at least 50-60%.
7. UBI incentivizes those people who literally have no ability to care for themselves or to contribute to the future of humanity. People who cannot work should not be producing children, but this is the exact opposite of what UBI encourages. Under UBI the useless parasitic aspects of humanity, can virtually endure unnaposed untill they trigger the collapse of humanity. UBI thus carves a sort of human zoo out of society. People are maintained for some vulgar morality and cherished for simply being human, when the reality is that their existence has been reduced to little more than that of an exhibit on the failings of the human morality. You might as well just put them in cages and throw banannas at them.
