I live in a rural area after working in networking in NYC for years.
It works differently here.
People want to hire people through people they know.
Most companies with networking contracts are smaller and family owned/operated, so they aren't stalking indeed and LinkedIn for resumes.
You just have to change your approach. Go places and start talking to people, making friends, and casually start talking about work, etc.
Eventually you'll meet someone who knows someone who owns a networking company, etc.

Its partially towns being spread out. The nearest community college is a one hour drive away. That is a two hour drive round trip.

In rural areas you need to target your job search. Don't post your resume to indeed and expect to find jobs.

Instead, based on whatever your field and experience is in, do some research. Look up companies you think you'd like to work for and check their websites for a hiring page. If they don't have one, call them up and ask.

Its shitty, but thats the way it is in a buyers market where the people outnumber the opportunities. In the city the opportunities typically outnumber the people so you can employ a "shotgun" method of searching instead of this "sniper" approach I've detailed.

there are oodles of folk around here that commute around an hour or 75 minutes to Atlanta, and the living can be rather rural although to someone that has *actually* lived in the middle of nowhere it should be more properly classified as "sub-rural" or "semi-rural"

Go check out your state personnel boars website. You best luck for finding tech jobs in rural area is in state and federal government. There is very little financial incentive for private corporations to operate offices in unprofitable areas. However, governments are spending organizations and are not concerned with turning a profit. I recommend looking into resource management agencies and dour state dept. of transportation. They operate offices in rural areas that require IT solutions.

I also want to add that state and federal agencies are always looking to hire because their low salaries usually lead to high turn around. Once most people have enough experience for a better paying job, they leave for greener pastures.
