The word "white" comes from the Portuguese and Spanish during their conquest in the Americas and they used it simply to distinguish themselves from the natives, a couple of centuries later the English speaking settlers in North America were using the word to mean "a person of European origin." Today, the American census defines "white" as "a person who has ancestral origins in the original peoples of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East" where as both the EU defines 'white' as someone who's ancestral origins descend from Europe, the British census uses the same definition for "White: Other" and then uses "white British" as its own category.

The reason there is so much room for disagreement is because "white" is too broad of a term and can just be used to refer to skin colour alone, so a white Korean could be white if you wanted.

The actual meaning of "white" is European though. In context, I always use the word European over "white." Leaves less room for disagreement.
