Until nationalism everything was fine. All that mattered was that you are loyal to the crown, not where you were born or what was your native tongue.
Then comes the 19th century and suddenly everyone thinks that they need to live in their own country based on language. Throw in some inbred and retarded hungarian nobles, only interested in preserving their priviliges and thinking all the regional minorities are less than human, Habsburgs shooting themselves in the foot by using divide and conquer tactics against Hungarians (during the 48-49 revolution) and what you get is an "empire" ready to die.

Hungarians were always the glue that held together the Balkans. Hungarians have the ability to create successful, functional societies that don't involve German autism or Slavic squalor and incompetence. You mean Hungary. The Hungarians were extremely militant in their Magyarization efforts in Transleithania and that led to the alienation of minority groups that lived within their lands. The Hungarian nobility absolutely refused in to accept change or modernization in any shape of form and thereby doomed itself. Their were too obsessed with their own privileges and dumping on ethnic minorities to actually see the big picture. The Germans were keen on modernizing and transition to multiethnic rule and they already granted notable autonomy to groups within Cisleithania with plans for a federalization of the Habsburg state. The Ausgleich ultimately doomed the empire as the Hungarians were too autistic to accept that they were no longer living in the early 19th century. The fact that the state only collapsed in October 1918, roughly at the same time as Germany and long after Russia shits on the meme that the collapse was inevitable. The Balkans would have been much better off under continued Habsburg and not the shitholes they currently are today.

You can't have numerous different ethnic and cultural groups making up one country unless you have an incredibly powerful central government that has the ability to exert force onto its populace. Once AH began to weaken there was little they could do to hold everyone in line. WW1 just knocked down an already dead empire.

It should come as a warning to any heterogeneous nations that exist today, but nobody ever takes any regard for history.
