Because Western media is oversaturated with left-wing political messaging, so we're drawn to the creative output of an insulated foreign island with creators who are willing to produce entertainment without constantly fellating themselves over how progressive and modern they are.
Once you start watching anime you realize how shitty Hollywood movies are, with their "every female character is Ellen Ripley" shit, their total inability to come up with original concepts, their strange unwillingness to embrace emotional intensity (when was the last time a Hollywood movie made you cry?), their safe as fuck humour that hasn't been funny since the 1990s. Once you get outside of that you wonder why so many people are so stuck in it. And part of it really is that it almost explicitly preaches to an audience who enjoys having their political preconceptions confirmed in media. "Wow, let's watch a story about how black people and white people can live in harmony." Sounds boring and moralistic, and it is, but the market thinks that's what people want these days, and it seems like in many cases they are actually right.

Not really worth arguing "anime vs manga" in my opinion. Both are good. I find I enjoy watching anime more. But what I said holds true in both cases, especially since most anime is based on manga sources.
I haven't really read Western comics since I was a kid, but it seems like they too are starting to succumb to the kind of political messaging I referred to. Wasn't there a super hero who was like a mexican illegal alien recently, or something? I seem to remember hearing that comics were trying to get woke and it wasn't working out for them.

Yes and no. The vast majority of the diversity stuff is overly pandering and trash, but even among that, there are gems. Reign of the Supermen is a good example, the adaptation was trash but I enjoyed the comic. At first I did raise my eyebrow at the notion of there being a black superman but when he's just a self-made man with no super powers who has a strong sense of right and was moved by the deceased real superman, has his own story, ambitions, motivations, and just puts on a home-made suit of ghetto armor and swings around a sledgehammer for justice, It really is an enjoyable take on something that at first glance seems vapid and forced. Most of the time when it's like this, it certainly does feel like pandering to minorities and sjw's. I won't contest it.

There are some creative series or ideas, but the vast majority of anime can be summed up as "cute character doing cute things," "generic school romance," "fighting in a generic science fiction or fantasy setting," or some combination of the three.
