Why are people so insistent on tackling immigration? Sure, immigration needs to be regulated otherwise it could definitely become problematic, but if managed correctly, could serve to be beneficial to society and the economy.
Surely the ageing population is a far bigger issue, both detrimental to society and the economy. To name a few issues:
- Labour force participation is relatively low in general (in the U.K) and is especially weak for 55+ and other risk groups - One of the most important is that there may be a lower proportion of individuals to pay taxes, work and provide care for those who need it - Losing the Brexit referndum was about the worst thing they could do. The economy will contract and our supply of young, tax-paying workers and immigrants will be cut and/or they won't want to come here.
But realistically speaking, immigration is one of many solutions to combat an ageing population. But why are people still so resistant to immigration?
tl;dr: More old people is bad for the economy (less taxes, less working class, more societal spending on elderly). Immigration is one of the few solutions to this unspoken problem.

Okay sure. Let's agree on the fact that there are cons to certain types of immigration: namely, crime.
But this is a small statistic of a certain subset of immigration. As someone said earlier, asians pay more in taxes than are a cost to the economy.
But then, a pro to immigration that most people fail to see is a consequence of an increase in competition for jobs. An increase in competition for employment will mean a direct increase in the competence of job-hunters. More people will strive to be more competent in order to increase the likelihood of 'climbing up the ladder'.
Surely that's a great thing for society? We would all love more competent people in society, right?

Read an economics book, butthole. The law of supply and demand applies to the labor market as well. The more laborers there are, the lower wages will be. Fewer laborers equal higher wages.
