To clarify we're talking hundreds of billions in savings. An increased VAT at around 10 - 12% is estimated to generate 800 - 900 billion dollars in additional revenue. If the cost for this program was 1.8 trillion a month then after VAT there's only 1 trillion left to go. Now the government is going to get a lot of this money back in sales tax, so let's say it's only 850 billion a month after that. Well revising the military budget and cracking down on our incredibly bloated defense spending would take us to the break even point and possibly beyond.
