You can't have a national vote count, without a national voting standard. Otherwise every state can just make up any number they want. So this is not necessarily a bad thing.

They campaign there because they are battleground states. Less campaigned states typically swing in one direction consistently.

In the example you cite, everyone's vote matters already -- that is a state where only a few votes could swing the state one way or another.

What folks often miss is that states are ALL swing states -- one party winning a state for a couple of cycles does not mean it will be safely the property of that party next time. California used to be a fairly reliable GOP state, and if we learned anything in 2016, it is that a determined campaign can flip a state everybody assumed was locked down for the other side.

Don't know if you ever heard the old political saw, "Pennsylvania; where Republican campaigns go to die." It made fun of GOP campaigns that foolishly wasted resources trying to win in safely-blue Pennsylvania, when those resources might be used someplace that was competitive. I suspect you won't hear that line used in discussing politics in 2020.

Once again. Out of the several reasons the founders put the electoral college in place was so smaller population (see rural) states would have more representation than high population states with urban centers. No state can have less than 3 votes in the electoral college.
Example:
Wyoming 210k votes cast. Each elector represented 70,000 votes
California 9.7 million votes cast, 54 electors. Each elector represented 179,000 votes.

Your vote mattered more in Wyoming than it did in California.

This is why I support the electoral college. I don't give a fuck about the 12 republicans left in california, their representation doesn't mean shit anyway. If I were them I would move anyway, couldn't pay me to be be in that state. It benefits my interests more to have the current system in place where rural areas/states have more representation than highly populated states/places.
