The issue is that people live on that dirt, and people living on dirt in one area have different issues and needs and wants than people living on other patches of dirt. If you let major cities be the sole deciders of elections, presidential candidates will cater themselves solely to city folk, ignoring the rest of the nation. People in small towns already get ignored for the most part (and as a result, small towns are dying). It'd only get worse if you got rid of the electoral college. This is very basic civics. You should have paid attention in school.
As an aside, it's funny that liberals will crow about giving "a voice to minorities" when that's exactly what the electoral college does. They all forget that, not too long ago, liberal ideas weren't mainstream, and that things like the electoral college and free speech allowed non-mainstream liberal ideas to get heard. Now that their ideas are mainstream, they're trying their best to kill the very institutions they used before they're used against them. What they fail to realize is that things change, and it wouldn't take much for the breeze to blow in the other direction. Islam is a religion that is on the rise, and they hate the fuck out of gays. If we allowed mob rule, how long would it take for the Muslim mob to ban gay marriage or make being gay illegal, especially when liberals seem hellbent in handing the country over to the Muslims? They just don't think things through. It's all emotion with them and zero logic, which leads to them constantly doing and pushing some of the stupidest shit.
