It was entirely possible to educate yourself while at school, but just passively receiving what the teachers taught could hardly be called an education.

Everything was about "scaling down," from the way things had been in the 50's and 60's. "How can we cut corners and save money without being accused of lowering the quality of education?"

After the 9/11 thing happened I got in trouble for bringing a knife to school.
It was a HUGE deal to all the adults. Like they all knew I wasn't going to hurt anyone with it, but they threw the book at me off of principle.

You know what, dudes, I'm feeling less like I missed out every time one of you guys post. The 80s lasted for 25 years in British Columbia, it seems.

We were metalheads. We all played guitar and shredded. We got into fights over nothing. We drove TransAms, we drank Lucky Lager, we dabbled in dip and smoked. We got hammered at school. We had dank big tittied heavy metal babes. We blasted Dio at the public library and were generally a menace.

That's the thing about it, having your whole childhood occur in the 90s is really a kind of sweet spot developmentally and culturally. It's not surprising that so many faggots in our peer group turned out like they did, it was too good before it suddenly turned to shit. I don't really romanticize the 90s but you could see why other people do.

We all carried knives, it was never considered a big deal. I do remember getting a visit from the assistant principle at middle school after Columbine, though. That was funny.

I believe this happened in the mid-late 90s first. The politically correct and enviro movement of the 90s was the dress rehearsal for what happened around 2000s etc like you describe.

There was significant pushback in the 90s against it when this happened. In the 2010s it finally took root in education and business alike.

I don't know about your situation in Canada obviously, but I really do feel the same that there was some kind of actual paradigm shift in or right after 2012.

Late ‘80s: Lot’s of rockers — gangsta shit hadn’t started yet and hip hop hadn’t really caught on. Maybe the occasional punk. Still a few New Romantics. Some goths. INXS, Depeche Mode, and The Cure playing all the time. Half the country love Reagan, the other half hated him. Had to learn all the Dewey Decimal System and card catalogue bullshit. Computers were expensive and somewhat mysterious. Madonna and Prince were still freaking some people out. Unless you were a hardcore bmx dude, no bike helmets. Skate boards were very different and came in three totally different types (vert, street, and freestyle). Newspapers and magazines were both useful and somewhat necessary. Autoreverse tape players were cool. Tape players with search were way fucking cool. CDs were alien technology for rich people.

Live local bands would occasionally play for free on Fridays at lunch and the kids would dance.

We had a school musical about getting the measles that was supposed to be cute and funny. The students had to paint red dots on their face. This was in the mid-80s.
