I learned to read, write and translate Arabic in roughly 6 months. I took a course after High school to find the meaning of life, and explore my spirituality, Im a bit shabby with my Arabic now. I'm trying to self learn but it's too hard. There's no good guide so sounds like the dark s, t, d, and dh I have no idea if I'm even pronouncing them correctly.

Also there's no fucking vowels written so if I see a new word, who the fuck knows how it's supposed to be pronounced.

Arabic is difficult to learn due to the resources available, it's next to impossible to master online. I've looked for years and the only thing available, including for payed services is the basics and intermediate stuff; you go from the alphabet to grammar and that's all about you're going to find. If you really want to learn Arabic, you need one on one lessons with a native speaker, for about a year or two, even then you won't be fluent. You can only truly master Arabic if you think in Arabic, if you speak it everyday, that's why they're aren't many non-native Arabic speakers who can speak Arabic fluently.

secondly it depends on your definition of fluent, and that is when you include variables such as accents and regional arabic.

Once you get passed MSA arabic, it isn't very useful in communicating with arabs, due to the variations of common words, for example- slipper can be said as 'shiff shiff/gazama/ egyptian, en3al gcc, or kaf old MSA.

It takes too much time to learn arabic and you're better off learning a different, less complicated language, there is no incentive to learn it unless you live and work in an arabic country, even then you can just speak english.

In my experience, that's really not the right way to look at them.

Duolingo is essentially a glorified flash card system. The biggest draw back I felt the system itself had was that it very much taught how to play the game rather than the language. E.g., I have these words to choose from, and I don't know what to use, but there is like one possible sentence I can make, so it's that.

My advice is to play the apps alongside other apps until you've got about 30 minutes of practice a day. So, download Memrise, or Anki decks, or Drops and set each to like 5-15 minutes of practice. By doing it in this way, you never "outpace" an app and simply have no idea what is going on, and you also fill in gaps the others create and don't gamify as much. Like the worst way to do this would be to use one app, infrequently, for large amounts of time a day.
