The British recognised the superior intellect of the Indians and perceived a high risk of failure if competition was fair. Curzon much later expressed concern that “higher posts…reserved for Europeans are being filched away by the superior wits of the native in the English exams” terming this as the “greatest peril with which the administration is confronted.” The examination was thus held only in London; the maximum age was kept at a low 22 and the syllabus had lower marks for Sanskrit and Arabic. That wasn’t the case because of the war, but because of the socialist bureaucracy you implemented post ww2. Food rationing and food cards ended in Germany in 1949/1950... ignoring British threats and advice at the time. It was not a problem to do it, because Germany embraced US style free market, anti-bureaucratic capitalism post ww2 starting in 1947 rather than UK style bureaucratic rule. This was mostly done as a way to stick it to the Soviets.

Yeah, the pre-WW2 (1930s) era was very comfy apparently. If you were an ICS officer the government would give you a free house and servants. Every year he would go to Darjeeling where most other officers would go for a vacation. It’s a small hill station.

After WW2 began, he was shifted to Eastern India, because the Japs were coming. Calcutta faced regular bombings from Japanese planes. This was the time where many English officers chose to stay in India due to war in Britain.

During the war, Hitler and Tojo (Japanese command) made the first Independent state of India with a provincial government in Singapore, with its own currency and army called the Indian Army, jointly trained by Italians and Germans (under Rommel's desert troops)
