A lot of the simulations rely on America acting offensively rather than chilling and defending US land instead. If we only protected the states, rather than overseas territories, the Russians/Chinese would not have the naval capacity necessary to land forces on our shores and keep them supplied

US military doctrine places too much emphasis on huge aircraft carriers. This is part of the reason more modular forces that rely more upon submarines and destroyers tend to kick our asses in most simulations.
Air superiority will be the deciding factor in WW3, if it should come. People here made fun of me for this when I said it, but land-based fighting and even sea-based fighting will be largely irrelevant.
And the machines of war will only get smaller. Drones will be the most effective weapons outside of fighter jets and mid-range destroyers.

Simulations are best form of approximation we have - it's miles ahead of speculation; it saved millions; optimized all aspects of engineering; put people on moon; created atomic bomb - statistics, math, simulations are our building blocks.
Don't understand who would advocate a carrier is defensible. All simulations since the 90's have clearly demonstrated a carrier strike group would be wiped out by even a single large missile cruiser if its well armed and gets all missiles out before its destroyed.
Russian anti ship missiles are next level. Faster than any current and next gen defense tech can defend against.

I think the bigger question raised here is how a war with China would play with the increasingly fractitious nature of US domestic politics. Jow Forums constantly clamors for CWII, but what if in the middle of domestic unrest China decides to make a move? Is there any way to revamp the US political order without leaving room for China to usurp us on the global stage? Would Americans give their rights away to chinese overlords in exchange for less shitskins and $1000 a month?

If the Chinese had ever fought a war (other than against their own people), I might be worried about China. Their command and control systems have never been seriously tested. They have some decent hardware they stole from the US, but we don't know how effective they are at using it, both strategically and tactically. In a war against the US, China's economy instantly fails and all their people starve and riot and overthrow the government and the new government immediately sues for peace.
The Russians have some possibly decent hardware, on paper, but they can't afford to actually buy anything beyond prototypes that lack the features they have designed on paper. For example, they have a single production Su-57, with another coming later this year, and the year after that they'll consider putting in an order for maybe a third plane. These sorts of budget issues plague the Russian military, and the Russian government in general. In a war against the US, even if their military hardware is 100% superior in every regard, they will run out of ammo and delivery platforms before the US runs out of planes and tanks and other things to throw at them in suicide missions.
If the US, Russia, or China ever go to war with each other, it will probably go nuclear pretty quick and everybody will lose. We might have some reason to hope that only tactical nukes will be used, but the damage to the global economy even in that limited scenario would still cause ruin for all involved and all not involved. Casualties would be incredibly high among all the belligerent military forces, and the world would never be the same.
For these reasons, and more, the threat of war between the US, Russia, and China is virtually non-existent. The three countries still want to assure mutual destruction on one another so that everyone stays reasonably friendly and trades with each other, and it's clear that military strength alone is not required to maintain that balance.

A lot of the responses came from people defending submarines but most of those who stuck around did so to debate the efficiency of large aircraft carriers. The technology I was referring to that can detect submarines isn't necessarily realized yet but it will be soon and when it is, submarines will be as easy to destroy as carriers.
Can we have some program where we take 10% of the current military, give them 3rd world tier equipment, and have them fight off in desertland for a year? When that year's up we can bring 'em back home, and give them all the good equipment again. Within ten years our military would be unstoppable. They'd swim from California to China with a rifle over their soldier just for the sake of fighting.
We could also get the NEETs to get Jow Forums enough for the military if we promised them captured gook or slav women as sex-slaves. Give Jow Forums a week and they'd develop a death ray that would sink China into the sea, if it meant they'd get laid.

Railguns and lasers are useless against a hypersonic anti-ship missile. It will hit a ship before its even detected. The only way to intercept would be to track the missile perfectly from space based systems with real time tracking relayed to on-ship anti-air. All the studies are out there and you can verify it yourself. Estimated cost of a proof of concept system capable of defending a carrier strike group against current gen anti ship missiles is over a trillion dollars, and on top of that the estimated chance of success is single digit percentage points.
So unless you are saying the us government is developing magic or is capable of creating on demand gravitational singularities you are full of shit.
