I've spoken with doctors about it. Male circumcision is a routine and common procedure that has been performed without anesthesia for decades. In short, it's tradition. Doctors treat it more as a ritual or rite of passage than as any sort of medical procedure. When I refused to have my son circumcised, the doctor didn't claim that I would be endangering my son's health, rather he went straight toward the social ostracization factor i.e. my son wouldn't be part of the tribe. My son would be different and that would be a bad thing, for some reason. I'm an American so the fact that a man of medicine would be so wholly guided by superstition and tribal mentality caught me by complete surprise.
