Yet they allowed someone attempting to perpetuate terrorism go. A person who methodically planned out a fake crime in order to further political and racial disruption. Such actions are a direct to public safety as they mean to disrupt it. Hate crimes are incendiary. And falsely reporting a hate crime is a hate crime itself. These accusations disrupt and divide the very fabric of the society. It can lead to riots and death. This is extremely serious, and it should be treated as such.
If someone sent fake harmless white powder to a hundred Chicago officials and politicians with the envelopes labeled Anthrax, would that be a "non-serious" crime worthy of being allowed to walk with charges dropped, and just community service and bond forfeiture? No, of course not, even though no "harm" was done.
Smollett should be charged with a federal hate crime, and our only hope left is the independent Federal investigation (still ongoing) about whether he used the US Postal Service to facilitate a crime bears fruit, and he's charged by them.
