He is now the "moderate" of the court, and judging from what I have seen from his previous jurisprudence and writings is more focused on protecting "the integrity of the court" than going full borne on supporting the Republican majority with Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. In my opinion, he wants to be the guiding factor for decisions at this point since he is the most powerful Chief Justice in nearly a century (rarely is the CJ a swing vote).
