The Ukraine was bankrupt post 2008 both Russia and the EU offered ballot packages to gain influence. Russia already had influence and was trying to keep it, they wanted to keep thier Port lease.
Cue color revolution to overthrow Ukrainian government and install a Western/EU friendly regime.
Local majority in Crimea has resolution to break away and join Russia. West casts this as fake and invalid, Russia accepts it and sends in troops to it's new territory.
