The old man sat with us and told us that socialism is just a codeword for Communism and that in his experience it was a small group of people who considered themselves intellectually Superior to everyone else who determined what everyone elses schooling, job and living conditions would be. He said that everyone thought they would eventually be one of the decision makers but in reality they were all peons. He said the only way out of their system and determine your own fate was to be an athlete, where your physicality determined your worth. After explaining this in broken English for what seemed to be at least a half an hour, he finally looked is in the eyes and said "open the door, get on the floor everyone walk he dinosaur"

I talked with a Romanian Professor I had that grew up in the USSR. He absolutely hated the life he had then, and loved the US.

I also have talked with a Pol who was forced to become an athlete, as she was naturally gifted. She was forced to burn her paintings and drawings so she could be focused on being an athlete. Now that she is in the US she loves life and paints every day and is a published author.

That kind contributed to the my "communist phase" that I went through when I was 12-15 years old.
Looking back, that guy never even lived in the USSR so most likely he got those stories from his parents or grandparents.

These other people have no reason to lie, because in Romania for example, Russians didn't have legal privileges, they only experienced the system. As opposed to the Russians they didn't rule half the world while they were doing it, and so, are going to be the most objective observers of what was going on. Most of them subsequently think it was horrible. The political repression is only downplayed by Russians because it's like a cost for their incredible all continent empire. Romanians and Poles and Czechs only had the system, not the glory, and they all revolted and hate it today too

Germans were deported from Yugoslavia after the war, but that still doesn't make them able to judge the country as a whole. Romanians were collaborators during WW2 so that may have had an impact in deportations. People shit on Soviet Union for going hard on Ukrainians while forgetting that Ukrainians were fighting alongside Germans in WW2 against the Soviets. Of course, the Russians aren't innocent in all of that, but neither are other nationalities. Retaliationism is bad, but it always has its reason, especially in a multiethnic country such as Soviet Union, where it's easy to become a scrapegoat due to historical associations.
