I haven't seen the show, so it didn't convince me of anything. I didn't say the women were competent. You're right, most strongandindependent women aren't.
But the books became all about them, while all the men died pitifully, got crippled, or turned into fools. I don't think Martin was necessarily trying to promote women, because he hates everyone so almost all his characters turn into sucky people. But he especially wanted to give a middle finger to readers who wanted the kind of heroic male characters the first couple books seemed to promise.
