I live in Puerto Rico and. I preferred statehood, but I've realized Americans do not like us so we need to become independent.
I prefer to be poor and not a burden that be middle class and a burden for a great country like USA is. Also, we will probably not do well in the Second American Civil War.
The issue is that decades ago most Puerto Ricans would support independence, and many fought for it, but Americans didn't give it to us, instead they gave us citizenship, so now the process will be a lot harder.

I hope that Puerto Rico gets its independence, however, I hate that Puerto Ricans are so leftist.

Culturally, we are not Left wing. We opposed gay marriage, for example.
We do have some left wing economic policies that made us worse, but not different from those in the USA. The problem is that they affected us more because we are a colony.
The most damage in the island was caused by corruption. Sadly.
But we are recovering and people are being more populist as in the USA.
I also support your independence, and the immediate return of all your countrymen back to your island homeland. That means anyone brown with a Puerto Rican flag hanging from their rear-view mirror will have two weeks to return home.

Courts will probably favor Puerto Ricans as Americans, so it will be impossible to take away their American citizenship, even if that would be good for Puerto Rico because we need our professionals back.

I would not have problem with that, but I would restrict free movement of people until all states get to a similar economic level, to prevent them flooding Puerto Rico.
I do not want Haiti and probably DR will not like them either.
But it is not a bad idea on the long run to make a supra state with other Caribbean countries and territories.
